Fort Worden was named after Rear Admiral John Lorimer Worden, USN, commander of the USS Monitor during the Civil War. The fort is located on the Quimper Peninsula in Port Townsend on Admiralty Inlet and has a commanding position for the protection of Puget Sound - the gateway to the Seattle area. It was built in 1897 as part of a three fort complex that was referred to as the Triangle of Fire. The other two forts were Forts Flagler and Casey.
