Cloud Forest Temple
The Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds in the heart of Weaverville is the oldest continuously operated Chinese temple in California. This Taoist Temple was built in 1874 to replace another similar temple that had burned down. During the nineteenth century, it was an important center for the large Chinese community that worked gold mines in the vicinity of the town. Today, it has added historic significance because many similar temples in Mainland China were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. In order to protect it, the temple is now part of the California State Park system and there is an entrance fee. A small museum contains interesting Chinese religious paraphernalia as well as some of the weapons used in the 1854 Tong War. A small Chinese style garden surrounds the temple.
