Trinity County, California
Trinity County is said by some to have been one of the first places that gold was discovered in California. A small group of men led by colorful Bill English discovered gold on the Trinity River in 1849 just as the Gold Rush was beginning to gather momentum. Thousands of prospectors and settlers came to the area in the succeeding years and established Weaverville as the county seat and commercial center for Trinity County. The Weaverville Drug Store was established in 1854 and has been in continuous operation ever since. It is one of the oldest businesses in the state. The town also has several important historic museums that tell of the early settlement of the area including an active Taoist place of worship. Hayfork and Lewiston also offer much of interest to history buffs. The Trinity River runs through the county and the enormous Trinity Alps Wilderness Area is located there. The county is covered with beautiful forests and has numerous lakes sprinkled throughout.
