Great Egret

Great White Egret is the symbol of the Audobon Society.
Once nearly extinct, he is now making a very nice recovery and you will see a number of these beautiful birds in these refuges.

The pictures on the following pages have been taken at the various wildlife refuges in Northeastern California and Southeastern Oregon over a period of several months. The individual birds come and go with the seasons and they have their favorite haunts, but generally speaking, you will find representatives of virtually all of the species in any of the refuges that have the conditions that they seek. The waterfowl are not going to nest alongside of the Bald Eagles in the Bear Valley Refuge, so don't go looking for ducks in Bear Valley, but you will find Bald Eagles in any and all of the refuges as they seek prey. If you are after waterfowl don't look for them in October in areas that are open for hunting. At best, they will understandably be skittish and at worst they will have moved on to one of the areas closed to hunting (and visitation by humans). White Pelicans are just about everywhere that there is water so you don't have to worry that you can't get to their favorite breeding spot in a remote portion of the Clear Lake Refuge. Many of the birds come and go with the great migrations in the Fall and the Spring, but don't forget the little songbirds, many of whom stay all year long. They are not as dramatic as the Sandhill Cranes or the Snow Geese, but they are just as interesting and they help hold down the bugs. (You may not appreciate that aspect of their presence while you are reading this at home, but you will when you get to the refuges!)

We have not identified the specific location where each picture was taken, other than to say that it was in the general area of the six refuges located in the Oregon/California border area. When you visit any of these refuges in this area you will want to check in with the various Visitor Centers. The staff there will be happy to tell you where the birds are at that particular time. They also have a wealth of information - some free and some for sale. It is also a great place to get help in identifying the new mystery bird that you will inevitably see on each one of your visits. These folks like birds and they know a lot about them. They have identified just under five hundred different species of wildlife in these refuges and most of them are birds!
