Siskiyou County, California
Mount Shasta

At 14,179 feet, Mount Shasta is the fifth highest mountain in California. It marks the southern extent of the Cascade Mountain Range and is thus a very important landmark in Siskiyou County. It was sacred to Native Americans and is an important tourist destination today. Humans have lived in Mount Shasta's shadow for more than 7,000 years, but the first written record of it was in Peter Skene Ogden's journal of 1826.

"Lonely as God, and white as a winter moon, Mount Shasta starts up
sudden and solitary from the heart of the great black forests of Northern California."
Joaquin Miller
