McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is named after two early pioneer families. Samuel Burney lived in the area in the 1850s and the McArthurs arrived shortly thereafter in the 1860s. In the 1920s, descendants of the two families donated the land surrounding Burney Falls to the state of California to be maintained as a state park. It is thus the second oldest state park in California. (Yosemite was the first.)

The centerpiece of McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is Burney Falls. It is 129 feet high and is fed by Burney Creek, which, in turn, flows from numerous underground springs. Burney Falls is unique, in that the flow of water over the falls is nearly constant throughout the year. The flow rate is 100 million gallons per day, thus ensuring a spectacular waterfall no matter the time of year. Teddy Roosevelt described Burney Falls as the eighth wonder of the world and, because of it's unique geological character, it was declared to be a National Natural Landmark in 1984.

There are camping facilities in the park as well as some limited hiking trails. Nearby Lake Britton provides opportunities for boating and water sports. Although small, the waterfall (and the park in general) is beautiful and well worth a visit.
