This small museum is a Treasure Trove
of important Historic Artifacts
from pioneer days and before.

The Modoc County Historical Museum located on Main Street in Alturas, California is well worth a visit. The core of the original collection includes an impressive collection of early firearms that was started in 1870 by Nathan Rogers of Merced. Over the years it was added to by Nathan's son Charles and in 1932 was purchased by Marc and Myrtle Belli of Alturas.

|
Mr and Mrs Belli started collecting historic artifacts in 1926 and continued until their collection was purchased by Modoc County in 1967. The museum housing the collection was first opened to the public in 1968 and since then has served as a repository for additional artifacts donated over the years.

A part of the collection that I really like is the extensive display of items from the Kober's Drygoods Store. Henry Kober established his store in 1888 and it was in operation for almost a century until his daughter Elsie died in 1984.

Native American artifacts on display in the museum include items from the three cultures that lived in Modoc County for thousands of years before the arrival of the European - The Pit River, Modoc and Paiute cultures.
