Red Bluff started out in the 1840s as a transportation center for steamships engaged in moving equipment and supplies to the mining camps in Northern California from as far away as Sacramento and San Francisco. The name of the town came from the red color of the bluff facing the Sacramento River above the spot where the steamships tied up. It was effectively the northernmost outpost on the Sacramento River due to the rapids just to the north of town. |
