The Grinding Rock at Folsom, Sacramento County

Grinding Rock at Folsom, Sacramento County, California

One of the least known and most interesting historic sites in the Folsom area is located on the edge of Lake Natoma within the boundries of Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park. It is an ancient grinding rock with numerous indivual mortar holes that can plainly be seen. Prior to the arrival of the Euro-Americans many generations of the Southern Maidu People used this rock to prepare their acorn meal. The work was done primarily by the ladies of the Maidu community and the grinding rock undoubtably served a social as well as a culinary purpose. It was a good place to share information on the day's events in the same way that other cultures did at the water well, the water cooler, or the coffee shop.
