Highway One wends it's way North from Tomales in Marin County and enters Sonoma County just Southwest of Valley Ford. It is old agricultural land and one can still see the brown and gray wooden remnants of old farm and ranch buildings mixed in with the newer agricultural buildings. Fences stretch across the hills and disappear over the horizon dividing land and marking territory. In the mid-1970s the conceptional artist Cristo was inspired to create a 24 mile "Running Fence" out of white fabric that meandered through the town, over the hills, and ended in the Pacific Ocean. |

If you are travelling in the area during a very heavy rain be very careful of the road south of town. It frequently has flooded spots that can be very dangerous. In flood years the road is sometimes covered for a day or two with enough water to drown the engine of vehicles trying to "make it" through the high water. If the weather is bad and you are in doubt, the better part of valor is to ask locally and check with the Highway Patrol. |
