A Spanish map dated 1824 shows "M. del Diablo" as a Christian Indian village. It obtained its name earlier in the century when a Spanish military force pursued a group of Indians that had run away from a mission. The Indians hid in a willow thicket and evaded their pursuers. The Spanish named the place "Thicket of the Devil" or, in Spanish, "Monte del Diablo." (Monte is Spanish for thicket.) Early Europeans, misunderstanding the Spanish language, thought that the name refered to the nearby mountain and called it "Mount Diablo." |
