The Redwood Empire

As you walk inland the forest changes. Very old trees are smaller than their counterparts closer to the ocean. The two trees in the pictures above were cut after they fell across the path in the same storm. Their growth rings tell two different stories. The tree to the right was close to the ocean and the one on the left was about a mile further to the east. This has led some to call the eastern portion of the forest a Pigmy Forest".
