River Road, Gualala

River Road follows the Gualala River upstream back away from the ocean into forest lands owned by Gualala Redwoods Lumber Company. There are a number of places where the river can be accessed before one gets into private land. Once famous for steelhead trout and salmon there are still a few anglers that try their luck aong the shore. Jack London considered the Gualala River to be one of his favorite fishing spots and there are some old photographs around that show some pretty big fish taken from the river. Today, kayaks are more numerous than fishermen. The river water is shallow and warm and, in the summer, locals frequent several old fashioned swimming holes. The sand bars are a great place for a picnic and a wonderful place for bird watchers.
