Mendocino County
Fort Bragg

Fort BraggFort Bragg is the largest town on the northern California Coast above San Francisco. Founded in 1885, this lumbering town took its name from the 1855 U.S. Army post established here on what was once an Indian village. Bragg was a Mexican War hero. As a young officer, Ulysses S. Grant was posted to this base but he found the peace and calm a bit boring. A few years later, however, his boredom vanished when he became Commanding General of the Union Armies, won the U.S. Civil War, and later became the 15th President of the United States, after Abraham Lincoln.

The town itself is primarily made up of turn of the century storefronts and a lot of energy is being invested by local citizens in maintaining them in a way that is consistent with their historic roots. Long overshadowed by Mendocino village just to the south, today Fort Bragg is becoming a popular leisure travel destination in its own right. There are plenty of lodging and camping opportunities and an increasing variety of food and drink emporiums, art galleries, small boutiques, and specialty stores. Native plant enthusiasts delight in the excellent nurseries located in the immediate area. A branch campus of the College of the Redwoods has been established just south of town and there are several live entertainment venues in town.

Nearby are several State and Regional parks that offer endless beaches and miles of hiking trails. Horseback riding, bicycle trails and nature walks are available. To the north Pudding Creek flows under a picturesque old wooden trestle. The trestle was part of a railroad used to haul logs into the mill and today is the southern end of the "Haul Road", a little known ten mile stretch of oceanfront that has been preserved as a park by the local community. The Noyo River joins the Pacific Ocean at the southern edge of town and Noyo Harbor at its mouth offers a small marina and a collection of restaurants that offer fresh seafood. Ocean fishing and whale watching trips are offered by several different companies.
