Langlois
Langlois is located on Highway 101, north of Port Orford and south of Bandon. It was first settled by Anglo-Europeans in 1854. Among the people that hacked farmland out of forest was the Langlois family, led by William Langlois, an immigrant from England. Farming and dairy quickly became the mainstays of the local economy. A locally famous cheese factory started making cheddar in 1925, but by 1941 was producing a very popular blue (Langlois Blue) which was promoted as having a strong resemblance to Stilton. Unfortunately, the cheese factory burned down in 1957 and was never rebuilt. Recently, sheep raising and wool production have become locally important business ventures. Today, the Langlois Market is the commercial and social center of the community and is reputed to make excellent sandwiches. Windsurfing and Kiteboarding are popular activities on nearby Floras Lake. Pronunciation of Langlois is a useful way to tell the difference between outsiders and locals. Most first time visitors start out trying to turn it into a French word (which it probably was in antiquity). Locals know the community as "langless."
