Klamath County
Highway 140 Klamath Falls to Lakeview - Winter
If one searches in Google long enough, one will find information and imagery related to the stretch of macadam between Klamath Falls and Lakeview. Usually, the text that accompanies the pictures will include words like remote, desert, far, and lonely. If one ever wanted to "get away from it all" this area would have to be high up on the list. I suppose that if you were to drive it regularly it might be considered bleak and possibly even depressing, but I like the drive - even in winter (as long as I can avoid the black ice). My description would include words like moody, thought-provoking, beautiful, even ethereal. On a good day, the hundred miles takes about two and half hours, but on this winter day it took a lot longer. I spent much of the trip thinking about a story that I heard about a cowboy who wrote a letter to his mother before he froze to death in his cabin somewhere around Bly. One of the things that he is reported to have said has stayed with me. "When I could have left, I didn't want to, and when I wanted to, I couldn't." If you fiddle with the verbs a bit, that pretty well sums up my thoughts about a lot of my own missed opportunities.
