Carmel - Mission San Carlos Borremeo

Junipero Serra, born at Petra, Isla del Mallorca in 1713 joined the Franciscan order in 1730 and distinguished himself early. In 1749 he travelled to Mexico where he was named Presidente of the Missions of Loreto in Baja California. In 1769 he established the first mission in what is today California in San Diego. On June 3, 1770 he arrived in Monterey and there founded the Mission San Carlos Borremeo. In 1774 the mission was moved to its present location in Carmel.
