The Arizona Territorial Prison is located in Yuma City. It was established on July 1, 1876, when seven inmates were incarcerated in cells that they had constructed themselves. The prison was operated for thirty-three years and more than three thousand prisoners were processed through it during that period. The last prisoner left the prison on September 15, 1909. It had an infamous reputation, but historians feel that it was humanly administered for its time. Today it is operated as a state park and is open for visitation.
