Yuma, Arizona, is located on Interstate Highway 8 in the extreme southwestern corner of the state on the borders of California and Mexico. The first European to visit the area was Hernando de Alarcon in 1540. He was a member of Coronado's expedition to find the Seven Cities of Cibola and he identified an important natural crossing of the Colorado River that has been important ever since. A small community grew up around the river crossing as east west travelers sought out the crossing. Steamboats were used on the river and stagecoaches passed through into and out of California. In 1870 the Southern Pacific Railroad bridged the river at Yuma. In 1864 Yuma was designated the county seat for Yuma County.
