Arizona State Highway 89A connects Flagstaff and Sedona and cuts through the Mogollan Ridge to do it. Driving this highway is one of the very best ways to see and understand the importance of the land form that divides Arizona into highland desert and lowland desert. The volcanic San Francisco Peaks, the highest mountains in the state, are situated just north of Flagstaff and rise to 12,633 feet. Flagstaff itself is just a few feet under 7,000 feet in elevation and Sedona is situated at 4,500 feet. The Mogollan Ridge drops percipitously between the two communities. Oak Creek has carved a beautiful canyon through the ridge and Highway 89A follows it's course. As can be seen in these pictures winter snow is fairly heavy in the Flagstaff area and almost non-existant in Sedona.
