Sedona - Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village |
||||
Sedona is located on Arizona State Highway 89A short distance south of Flagstaff. Ancient hunter gathers roamed through the region thousands of years ago and more recently the Sinagua and Apache cultures occupied the area. At least as early as 1875 U.S. Army patrols from Fort Verde moved through local canyons in search of hostile Indians. In 1876 J.J. Thompson homesteaded in Oak Creek Canyon and developed an area that had been cultivated earlier by Native Americans. Other Anglo-European settlers followed and in 1902 a post office was established by T.C. Schnebly. Schnebly's wife's name was Sedona and he named the community after her. Today Sedona is an important artist's community and center for tourism. |
