Prescott - County Seat |
||||
Prescott is located on Arizona State Highway 89 in the central part of the state. Hunter-gathers lived in the area during prehistoric time and more recently it was the homeland for the Yavapai Indian Tribe. Fur trappers passed through the area during the early nineteenth century and gold was discovered in Granite Creek in 1863. The Arizona Territory was created in 1863 and Prescott designated its capital in 1864. The city was named in honor of the prominent historian William Hickling Prescott. Prescott remained the capital of Arizona until 1867 when it was moved to Tucson. In 1877 it was moved back to Prescott until 1889 when Phoenix was selected. Today Prescott serves as the county seat of Yavapai County. |
