Montezuma Castle National Monument - The Ruins

Montezuma Castle National Monument is located close to Interstate Highway I-17 about fifty miles south of Flagstaff and ninety miles north of Phoenix (Exit #289). It is the site of an ancient cliff dwelling built by the Sinagua People circa 1400 A.D. The nearby Montezuma Well also has ruins around a spring set in a large limestone sinkhole. The outlet to the spring feeds an irrigation system that dates back some eight centuries. Early European settlers in the area mistakenly believed that the site was an outpost of the Aztec civilization and named it accordingly.
