Nogales - County Seat - Mexican Border Crossing

Nogales, Arizona, is located on Interstate Highway 19 at the border of Mexico. Before the Spanish arrived it was the homeland of the Pima People. In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries Jesuit Missionary Eusebio Kino traveled through the area frequently. In 1853 the Gadsen Purchase brought Nogales under the control of the United States. In 1861 Apaches under the leadership of Cochise and later Geronimo harassed the area. In 1862 Pete Kitchen started a ranch in the area. In 1880 Jacob Isaacson, a Russian immigrant, built a trading post on the U.S. side of the border. In 1881 Juan Jose Vasquez built a saloon on the Mexican side. In 1882 the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad joined with the Sonora Railroad from Guyamus, Mexico in Nogales. In 1883 Wells Fargo built a stagecoach station and in 1899 Santa Cruz County was formed with Nogales as it's county seat.
