Snowflake- A Winter Morning

James Stinson was the first Anglo-European to settle in the area in 1873. Snowflake was founded in 1878. It was named for two early Mormon leaders - Erastus Snow and William Jordan Flake. Snow was the Apostle in charge of Mormon settlement in Arizona and Flake was the leader of a small group of settlers which purchased the land from Stinson. The monument in front of the new Mormon church depicts a meeting between Flake and Snow.
