Safford was founded in 1874 when a small group of pioneers led by Joshua Eaton Bailey settled in the area. The town was named after the third territorial governor of Arizona, Anson Pacely Killen Safford. The people that live in Safford today say that they are all about "rural and the outdoors." The town offers lodging, restaurants and the other basic necessities to serve as an excellent base of operations for exploration of the eastern edge of Arizona. The folks at the Visitor's Center are particularly friendly and very willing to assist travelers.
