Globe, Arizona, is located at the junction of U.S. Highways 60 and 70 in the southeastern quadrant of the state. It is said that a huge globule of silver was discovered here in the 1860s. It resembled a globe - hence the name of the town. The silver mines petered out but copper mining is still going on in nearby Miami. The Tonto National Forest surrounds the town and the San Carlos Apache Reservation is nearby. The Besh-ba-Gowah Archeological Park, consisting of a restored Salado pueblo ruin, is situated on the outskirts of town and well worth a visit.
