Sunset Crater Volcano is located just off of Highway 89 a few miles northeast of Flagstaff. It is about 900 years old. As such it is one of the youngest volcanos on the Colorado Plateau. It began oozing magma (melted rock) up out of fissures in the earth in 1064 A,D, and continued growing the cinder cone until about 1090. It went dormant in 1250. Several pit houses of the Sinagua People who inhabited this region have been excavated from under the loose cinders. More are thought to have been destroyed by the eruption.
