Grand Canyon National Park

The oldest rocks at the bottom of the Grand Canyon are believed to be almost two billion years old. The cap rock that rims the canyon is thought to be about 270 million years old.The Colorado River has been carving the canyon for about 5 or 6 million years and it is still working hard on the project. At the present time the canyon is about 4,600 feet deep (measured at Yavapai Point). From the South Rim the North Rim is from 8 to 16 miles across the canyon.
