Tombstone boasts a number of famous saloons, one of which is the Bird Cage Theatre. Built in 1881, it featured a long bar and gilded cages suspended from the ceiling. "Ladies of the evening" were displayed in the cages. The Bird Cage Theatre was a lively place. In 1882 the New York Times reported that "the Bird Cage Theatre is the wildest, wickedest night spot between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast." The Bird Cages were the inspiration for the song "She's only a bird in a gilded cage" which was popular in the early Twentieth Century.
