Cochise County

Fort Bowie National Historic Site - First Fort

The second Fort Bowie was started after the end of the Civil War and completed in 1869. Cochise died in 1874, two years after he had made peace with the United States. The United States Government decided to relocate the Chiricahua Apache to the San Carlos Indian Reservation in New Mexico, but Geronimo and a hundred or so of his followers refused to be relocated. Instead they returned to raiding on both sides of the US/Mexican border. Cavalry operations out of Fort Bowie were instrumental in wearing Geronimo down over the next decade of warfare. He surrendered in September 1886.
