Fort Bowie National Historic Site - First Fort |
||||
On July 15, 1862, Brigadier General James Carlton was leading a Union Army through Apache Pass when it was attacked by Apache Indians. The "Battle of Apache Pass" raged for two days before the Indians were finally routed. Following that engagement a detachment of the 5th California Volunteer Infantry was ordered to construct the first Fort Bowie above Apache Spring in the summer of 1862. It was named after the commander of the 5th Infantry, Colonel George Washington Bowie. |
