Fort Bowie National Historic Site - Apache Spring

One of the more important ruins in the Fort Bowie complex is the Chiricahua Apache Indian Agency building used by Cochise's blood brother, Thomas Jeffords, in 1875-1876. Nearby Apache Spring was known to Mogollon Indians before the arrival of the Apache in the Chriicahua Mountains. Spanish records note the spring and it is clear that the Apache had long used it prior to the coming of the Americans in the nineteenth century. It's existence was what made Apache Pass a feasible route through the mountains. TheApache camps in the Chiricahua Mountains usually consisted of one or more brush wikiups. These structures consisted of a simple pole framework covered with beargrass and/or skins.
