Douglas |
||||
Douglas is located on the Mexican border 118 miles southeast of Tucson. It was founded in 1901 and quickly developed into a major smelter site for the surrounding copper mines in the area. In later years agriculture and ranching have become important mainstays of the local economy. Across the border in Mexico is Agua Prieta first settled by Chiricahua Apache Indians in the late 19th century. In 1915 Pancho Vlla fought (and lost) an important engagement with Mexican Federal troops in Agua Prieta. |
