Neil Erickson was born in Sweden and immigrated to the United States as a young man. He joined the army and served in Fort Craig, New Mexico as First Sergeant in the 4th Cavalry. While serving at Fort Craig he met and fell in love with Emma Peterson, another Swedish immigrant who was working as a maid for the wife of an army colonel. In 1886 they were married at Fort Bowie. In 1887, following Geronimo's surrender and Neal's discharge from the army, the Ericksons established a homestead in Bonita Creek. Over the years the homestead grew into Far Away Ranch. In 1917 it started accommodating guests. Today it is preserved as a historic site within the Chiricahua National Monument.
