Cochise County
Chiricahua National Monument
Before Anglo-Europeans arrived in Arizona the Chokonen band of the Apaches lived in the Chiricahua Mountains in what is now Southeastern Arizona. The Apaches resisted Spanish, Mexican and American encroachment on their lands and leaders like Cochise and Geronimo found shelter in these famous rocks until late in the nineteenth century when the Chiricahua Apaches surrendered and were transported to reservation in Oklahoma and New Mexico. With their departuture the way was opened for immigrants to settle in the area and the Ericksons established a homestead in 1887. It has been incorporated into the park as a historical district.
