Canyon de Chelly National Monument
The first human visitors are thought to have entered Canyon de Chelly some 5,000 years ago. Traces of their campsites have been found and some of the rock art in the canyon has been ascribed to these early hunters. People have lived in the Canyon ever since. Ancient Puebloans built multi-storied stone and adobe structures throughout the canyon system and Navajo and a few Hopi people continue to live and farm in the Canyon today. Anyone interested in Native American culture should put Canyon de Chelly (pronounced d'shay) on their must see list.
