Trillium (Trillium ovatum) has been classified as a member of the Trillium family (Trilliaceae), but now it is being treated as part of the Melanthiaceae family. It is found growing on the forest floor in moist areas. The seeds are spread by ants and mice. It is exceptionally delicate. Picking the flower may easily kill the plant or set it back for years. It was named by Carl Linnaeus (Carl von Linne) in the eighteenth century. The name is derived from its three leaves. The white trillium is the official flower of Ontario, Canada.
